Raleigh, NC — North Carolina is mourning the loss of a broadcasting giant. Charlie Gaddy, the legendary WRAL news anchor who became a household name across the state and was affectionately known as “the Walter Cronkite of North Carolina,” passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 93.

Gaddy’s death was confirmed by WRAL News Director Mike Friedrich, who reflected on the profound influence Gaddy had on journalism in the state. “It’s a sad day here,” Friedrich said. “Whether you grew up watching Charlie or you didn’t — or you only heard about him — he was a guy who continued to make his mark on this newsroom and was part of that gold standard that built WRAL.”

For decades, Charlie Gaddy was the face of evening news in North Carolina. Calm, trustworthy, and sincere, he anchored WRAL’s evening broadcasts during a pivotal era of growth in both the state and in local journalism. His warm presence and distinctive voice made him a comforting figure in homes throughout the region — someone people turned to for both the everyday stories and the historic moments.

A North Carolina Favorite Son

Charles Reece Gaddy was born and raised in North Carolina, and his love for the state never wavered. His career began in radio before transitioning to television, where he would go on to become one of the most recognizable and respected figures in local news. He joined WRAL in the 1970s, and over the following decades, helped transform the station into a trusted news source that North Carolinians relied on daily.

His commitment to journalistic integrity and his ability to connect with viewers earned him comparisons to national broadcast legends, but to many in North Carolina, he was something even greater — he was theirs. He carried the stories of North Carolina on his shoulders, always with professionalism, compassion, and deep respect for the communities he served.

A Legacy Beyond the Newsroom

Though Gaddy retired from the WRAL anchor desk in 1994, his legacy lived on in the newsroom and in the hearts of viewers. His dedication to truth and clarity continued to inspire new generations of journalists.

He was a mentor to many young broadcasters, always offering encouragement, wisdom, and a powerful example of what it meant to be a journalist. Even long after his retirement, Gaddy remained a regular presence at WRAL, sharing memories and offering guidance. “He was part of that gold standard that built WRAL,” said Friedrich.

Gaddy’s legacy also includes civic and charitable involvement. He used his public platform to support causes and organizations across the state. Whether it was education, healthcare, or the arts, Gaddy gave generously of his time and influence to help North Carolina thrive.

A Devoted Husband and Family Man

In addition to his professional achievements, Charlie Gaddy was known for his deep devotion to his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Nancy Rankin Gaddy, for over 60 years. Her passing in 2021 marked a deeply personal loss for Gaddy. Together, the couple were a fixture in Raleigh’s civic and social life and were admired for their enduring love and partnership.

Friends and colleagues remember Gaddy as a man of character, humility, and heart. His warm smile, gentlemanly demeanor, and deep connection to the people of North Carolina left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Honoring a Broadcast Icon

As news of his passing spreads, tributes are pouring in from across the state and beyond. From longtime WRAL viewers to fellow journalists and state leaders, the message is clear: Charlie Gaddy was not only a newsman — he was a North Carolina institution.

He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of integrity, kindness, and public service. His impact on journalism and his state will not be forgotten.

The WRAL family and the people of North Carolina join together in mourning his loss and celebrating the extraordinary life he led.

Rest in peace, Charlie Gaddy. You truly were the voice of a generation, and the heart of North Carolina news.
